Can DripDrop ORS be administered through a nasogastric (NG) tube?
DripDrop ORS given via an NG tube or gastrostomy (“G” tube) should only be done under close medical supervision. The amount to be given should match the amount lost by diarrhea. Initially, in moderate dehydration, the dosage should be 20ml/kg/hour for 2-3 hours to match losses. Check for residual fluid in the stomach if patient becomes distended (bloating) or vomits. Slow the rate of infusion if residuals (measurable amounts of substance in the stomach) are more than 50ml, until the residuals diminish.
